Farner Named ASUN Player Of The Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida Baseball junior infielder Mathew Farner was named ASUN Player of the Week on Monday.
"His performances this week and since the start of the season have been outstanding, but what makes it special is how it has energized the entire team," Head Coach Joe Mercadante said. "He's earned this recognition through hard work, competing every day and doing things the right way. As a team, we are very excited for Mathew to have this recognition and are extremely proud of him."
Farner went 8-16 with eight RBI, eight runs, six walks, two home runs and two stolen bases across North Florida's 3-1 stretch to close out last week's slate. Farner tallied team-highs with .938 slugging, a .636 on-base percentage, a .500 batting average and a 1.574 OPS in four games. It marked the first time this season that an Osprey earned the weekly conference honor.Â
Farner was solid defensively at both third base and shortstop as well, notching eight assists and four putouts in North Florida's last four games.
The junior infielder, Farner, got off to a hot start at No. 21 Florida State on Wednesday. Farner belted his fifth home run of the season with a leadoff shot to left-center field in the top of the first inning. Farner finished the game at No. 21 FSU 2-4 with three RBI, two runs, two walks and one home run.
On Friday against Presbyterian, Farner cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field. It marked his sixth home run of this season to improve his team-high total. Farner finished Friday's game against Presbyterian 3-4 with five RBI, three runs, one home run and two walks.
In the series finale against Presbyterian on Sunday, Farner helped UNF notch the sweep with his third multi-hit game of the week, going 2-3 with two runs.
North Florida remains at Harmon Stadium for its midweek game against Villanova on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:05 p.m. ET.
