
Women's Basketball Cruises Past Queens To Secure First ASUN Win, 64-51

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – North Florida Women's Basketball picked up its first ASUN Conference win of the season at Queens, 64-51, inside Curry Arena on Saturday.
Junior guard Alonya Waldon and redshirt sophomore guard Alexa Washington led the way for North Florida offensively each contributing 20+ points.Â
After the first quarter, Queens held a 14-13 advantage. In a first half that featured five lead changes, the Ospreys grabbed a 26-24 lead headed into the halftime break after back-to-back layups from sophomore forward Nicole Carreno.Â
Washington led the way for UNF in the first half with seven points on 3-4 from the field and 1-1 from three.
Queens would grab the lead early in the third quarter, before North Florida reclaimed the lead, 29-27, and never looked back off a Washington three at the 9:11 mark of the third quarter. The Ospreys would take a 43-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
After Queens narrowed the margin to five, 53-48, at the 2:38 mark, UNF quickly responded with an 9-0 run started by an and-one finish from Alonya Waldon to give North Florida a 62-48 lead with 34 seconds remaining. 18 of Waldon's 21 points came in the second half of action, as she shot 6-6 from the field and 2-2 from three in the second half of play.
In addition to 21 points, Waldon contributed four assists and four rebounds on 7-9 from the field, 3-4 from three and 4-5 from the free throw line in a career-high 36 minutes. For Waldon, it was her second-consecutive game with 20 or more points. It also marked her seventh game of season and 18th career game with 10 or more points.
Washington posted a season-high 20 points five rebounds and two steals on 6-9 from the field, 2-3 from three and 6-6 from the charity stripe in 32 minutes. For Washington it was her first game of the season and second career game with 20 or more points. It also marked her fourth game this season and 12th career game with at least 10 points.
Overall, North Florida shot 44.2 percent from the field, 43.8 percent from three and 84.6 percent from the free throw line and led Queens in rebounds, 36-30, points off turnovers, 18-16, points from the paint, 30-22, second chance points, 10-9, fast break points, 9-6 and bench points, 11-6.Â
North Florida returns to UNF Arena, welcoming North Alabama on Thursday, Jan. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
