Pedroza Resets Program Record, Fisher Clinches Facility Record
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - North Florida indoor track and field team closed out the Celebration Pointe Indoor Classic with a few records and a plethora of personal bests on Saturday afternoon.
Robert Pedroza overturned his own mark in the 5000m after setting a new program record in the 800m. The senior notched the race in 1:50.68 clinching a second-place title overall.
Erica Fisher got the pace going with a record breaking performance, overturning the Alachua Sports Complex facility record in the women's 5000m. Fisher finished in 17:21.20.
Men
"Robert [Pedroza] had a great day. His mile was really good. Then, coming back and running 150 for a school record in the 800m. He's had a really good day. And of course, I thought Seth [Martinez] and all the guys in 5K did a great job. There were a lot of personal bests. A lot of guys who ran the 5k many, many times, so you know, it's one thing to be a PB [personal best], but when it's something you've been doing for three, four years in college, it's nice to know that you're in the best shape you've ever been in your life.Â
I feel like we have a lot of people at that point. So I was really proud of, you know, the large number of guys. The 5k was really good and it wasn't like a highly contested race. So they just went out, ran hard, and made it a great race. So I was really proud of that. I think that Jonathan Bailey continues to look good, and Rey [Hernandez] is looking good in the events that he's doing. Hernandez is specifically in the hurdles.
The men's four-by-four, I was really proud of the way those guys competed. Camden [Springer] led off, strong leg put us in a good spot and then LaDarius [Tellis] did a good job and Ryan [Douihech] was third, and then we brought home a really nice close. So that's a little bit of what we have. That's a pretty strong school record. I was really proud of how those guys competed today.
I thought Smilia [Kolbe] did a great job on that 800m. That's a really fast race of the year for her. And Ella [Chandler] was second, so really proud of that effort. And then those two were on the four-by-four with Celine [D'Anna] and Melissa [Epting]. And that's a really good run; they got second, so we're happy with that. In the woman's 5K, Erica [Fisher] leading the way was a big meet for her. She had a big time indoors meet with a fast time. Then, I think Isa [Leen] had a really good meet Hannah [Martin], Billie [Castillo]. All of them were lifetime bests and had really strong performances. So it's great to see the continued growth in the five.
I think that's really good. it's one thing to be in a good 5k, a lot of times those happen when you're in a big race with a lot of fast people, and you know, obviously respectful of other people in the race, but It wasn't like it was a loaded field. And so for those two to just go out and let Erica do most of the leading, that was really good. Ana [Markovina] did a great job in the mile, her and Jada [Williams] both, so that was really cool."
