Gibson, Rafnsdottir Each Go For Double-Double Days
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball (4-8) sweep the extended weekend with a 70-38 victory in the final home game of the 2024 calendar year against Coastal Georgia (7-5), on Monday afternoon at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys were held together by their defense, as they limited the Mariners to 38 points for the lowest scoring total allowed on the season. It's also the fewest amount of points allowed for head coach Erika Lambert in her head coaching career and the first time keeping a team to 38 points or lesss since December 2022.
Another big achievement from UNF was having a pair of Ospreys record double-double performances with Jasmynne Gibson (14 pts, 12 rebs) and Helena Rafnsdottir (10 pts, 10 rebs) both reaching those marks. It's the first double-doubles for both Gibson and Rafnsdottir in their careers and the first time it has happened for a pair of Osprey teammates in the same game since facing Trinity Baptist in 2023.
North Florida | 4-8
Coastal Georgia | 7-5
First Half: UNF made its first field goal of the game well into the start of regulation with Nicole Carreno taking a layup into the paint...a fastbreak bucket from Sarah Taub to Rafnsdottir put the Ospreys out front by three...Taub continued to be effective with a three-pointer with the clock winding down to end the first period...a layup from Rafnsdottir and a trey from Jamisyn Stinson gave UNF breathing room to start the second quarter...seniors Selma Eklund and Kaila Rougier banked in some more scores to reach a double-digit lead...Grace Hunter ended the half with an Ospreys field goal for a seven-point lead at the break.
Second Half: The Ospreys came out swinging to start the second half with seven straight points from Jazmine Spencer, Carreno and Gibson...Rougier continued to control the game with another score, while Gibson kept dealing in the paint for UNF with back-to-back buckets...a steal-and-score from Spencer to Rafnsdottir put the Ospreys ahead by 18 entering the fourth...Spencer kept firing off jumpers as another one sinked in the net for points...a three-point barrage ensued from Hunter and Carreno, mixed in with layups from Rafnsdottir to put the game out of reach in the 32-point win over Coastal Georgia.
