Previously Head Coach at Knox College For Four Seasons
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida cross country and track & field adds Evander Wells as an assistant coach as made official Friday afternoon.
"I think Evander [Wells] is a great fit for our program. We are expanding our roster in sprints, hurdles and jumps, and his experience will be a great asset to our team," said head coach Jeff Pigg on the addition. "He has found success coaching a wide variety of events. Obviously, he knows the sprints since he was a world class sprinter, and I believe he will do a great job in the recruiting trail as well. Most importantly, he is a high character guy, which matches well with our values and philosophy here at UNF."
Wells served as the head cross country and track and field coach at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., from 2019-2023. In his four seasons, Wells coached over 35 All-Midwest Conference performers, 81 Academic All-Midwest conference honorees and eight MWC Performer of the Week honorees.
During the 2022-23 season, Wells helped sprinter Tyrell Pierce place sixth in the 400m finals at the D-III NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn All-American status. He and Derrick Jackson also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, as they both took fifth in their respective events.
Before his time at Knox College, Wells was an assistant track and field coach at Earlham College in Indiana. He instructed sprinters and jumpers, while mentoring 16 student-athletes to league titles in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC).
Wells also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Quakers. Wells coached Earlham sprinter Aishat Sadiq to an eighth-place finish and All-America honors at the 2019 NCAA D-III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning Earlham's first All-America honor in any sport since 2008.
As a student-athlete, Wells had a successful sprinting career at the University of Tennessee. He was a four-year member of the Volunteers and a nine-time All-American, as well as an 18-time Southeastern Conference (SEC) finalist.
Wells ranks in the top-10 all-time at Tennessee in the 60m, 100m, and 200m dashes. He qualified for seven NCAA Championships and was a member of the United States NACAC and World Junior Teams.
Wells received his Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art with an emphasis on two-dimensional art in 2010.
