Ospreys Defeat JU, UNA
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida beach volleyball upped its season-wins total to 24 after taking two of three matches in the double elimination tournament, sending the Ospreys (24-10) to an ASUN Championship Semifinals matchup against second-seeded FGCU tomorrow at 11 a.m.
North Florida came up just a point short of reversing a 3-2 loss to a 3-2 victory against FGCU (17-16) in the day's opener. But, the Eagles were able to drop in an ace and score on an error in the next play in a decisive three-set battle at the top slot. UNF and FGCU battled for every point with all five courts going to three sets.
UNF rebounded in a big way, moving through the slog of a three-match day to advance to Sunday's round. North Florida eliminated rival Jacksonville, 4-1, completing North Florida's fourth win against the Dolphins (12-22) on the season.
The Ospreys pulled off the 3-2 win against UNA (21-16) to complete the push to Sunday's semifinals. Madison Espy and Presley Murray remained proficient in three-set affairs, clinching the match at the second slot.
Â
A vintage battle against long-time ASUN rival FGCU concluded on the top court in three frames after the previous four did the same. Both teams split the four and five pairs, as well as the second and third slots.Â
After taking the first set, Iris Fletcher and Audrey Brooks had things evened up following a 22-20 second-set loss. Both UNF and FGCU's top pair had multiple match points, although the Eagles eventually prevailed following a fortuitous ace and an error.
