Baseball Erases Early Deficit With 17-Run Outburst Against Murray State

Ospreys Tally 20 Hits, Three Home Runs and Brinling Goes 5-for-5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Murray State (1-2) took a very brief 2-0 lead in the first inning, but UNF baseball (2-1) erupted by scoring in seven of its eight trips to the plate in a 17-7 series-clinching win Sunday, February 19.

The Ospreys tallied 20 hits, with five of them coming from Austin Brinling. Cade Reich finished just one triple shy of the cycle, while Reich, Peyton Sybrandt and Cherokee Nichols went yard for the first time in their UNF careers.

One of the most notable stats was UNF's 13 two-out runs as seven Ospreys earned at least one RBI.

  • UNF punched back, scoring four in the first. Aidan Sweatt was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Gabriel Esquivel's single to right. Peyton Sybrandt singled through the right side and Cade Reich belted a three-run home run to left.
  • Murray State homered again in the second, this time a solo shot to right.
  • The Racers regained the lead with a sac fly and two-out RBI through the right side in the third

  • Small ball gave UNF the 6-5 lead in the fourth. Austin Brinling singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Aidan Sweatt RBI groundout.
  • UNF's lead expanded in the fifth thanks to more two-out production. With the bags juiced, Brinling laced a two-RBI single through the left side. Sweatt followed with a one-hopper back up the box, scoring Dallen Leach.
  • Once more, two-out production allowed UNF to put up more numbers in the sixth. Reich singled, stole second and advanced another 90 feet on a throwing error. Alex Lodise sprayed a two-out single to right, giving UNF a 10-5 lead.
  • Murray State broke a stretch of three scoreless with runs on a wild pitch and sac fly.
  • Brinling sparked UNF's offense once more in the seventh, doubling inside the third base bag before eventually scoring on a Cherokee Nichols two-out single to left.
