Outfielder Becomes the Eighth-Highest Selection Among OF in UNF History
SECAUCUS, N.J. - After showcasing a big bat, big wheels and a big-time presence in center for the Ospreys over the past three years, outfielder Tanner Murphy will set his eyes on the Big Apple after being drafted by the New York Mets as the 538th pick in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.Â
Murphy is the second Osprey to be drafted in the 2019 June Draft after right-handed pitcher Brad Deppermann was scooped up by the Cubs in the seventh round (222nd pick) yesterday. The St. Augustine, Fla., native is the first UNF outfielder to be drafted since Yahir Gurrola was nabbed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017. Murphy becomes the 11th Osprey outfielder to be drafted in school history and the 51st North Florida player to be picked up in the MLB Draft.
Â
The Bartram Trail HS standout is coming off a laurel-filled season in Jacksonville. Murphy became the UNF Baseball program's first ASUN Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year while also being recognized with ASUN First Team All-Conference recognition. In three seasons Murphy hit .311 with 102 runs, 165 hits, 32 doubles, 17 homers, 94 RBI, 38 stolen bases and a .994 fielding percentage as the captain of the outfield.
Murphy reeled in a number of single season, career and single game records as well:
The Jacksonville-local also earned ASUN Player of the Week honors February 25, was a unanimous ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team honoree and received ASUN First Team All-Conference and ASUN All-Academic Team honors in 2018.
