Baseball's Murphy Featured in ASUN Beam Series

ATLANTA - North Florida's Tanner Murphy was recently featured in the ASUN's Beam Video Series, a series that features two student-athletes from each of the conference's nine institutions that exemplify dedication and success in the classroom and on field of competition.
North Florida's Tanner Murphy recently took home the ASUN's top academic honor, as he was named 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first UNF baseball player to earn the accolade. The junior center fielder owns a 3.90 GPA as a finance major. Along with being tabbed Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a first team all-conference honoree, Murphy was named to the ASUN All-Academic team for the second-straight season. Some of Murphy's other academic accomplishment's include: 2018 ASUN Honor Roll, UNF's Highest GPA for Male Athlete in 2018, 2018 UNF Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the UNF Presidential Scholarship.
"The biggest thing about Tanner Murphy is that he's extremely driven," UNF Compliance Coordinator said. "I would say no matter what he wants to do he's going to do, he's going to put his mind to it and be the absolute best he can be. He doesn't compare himself to others, but he does push himself to be his absolute best."
Murphy echoes Sunquist's sentiments about being driven and never settling.
"Student first means that there are a lot of things you can't do that maybe some other students would do," Murphy said. "You have a lot less time, so you have to spend that time doing your schoolwork. Going 100% all the time, never settling for a "C" or settling for going 1-for-3 in a game. You want to do the best you can at all times." Murphy said.
The extra effort in the classroom has enabled him to pursue a double major.
"Tanner tells me he's going to double major after this year because he has so many credits to go forward with, " UNF Head Coach Tim Parenton said. "He's going to make it in the business world and he also may have a chance to make it on the baseball field. He does a great job for us and he has some interest from some pro clubs."
ASUN Postseason honors weren't the only laurels Murphy earned this year. In a 13-7 win at FAMU May 7 Murphy tied a UNF DI single game stolen base record with four steals. He set the program record for a single game by walking five times. A few days later he became the UNF DI career stolen bases record holder. Murphy went on to finish atop the conference in steals during regular season play.
Murphy and the Ospreys take on second-seed Liberty at 4 p.m. May 24 with a chance to go to the ASUN Championship Semifinals.
