Late Goal Lifts Upstate Past Women's Soccer
9/29/2017 9:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - USC Upstate scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as North Florida women's soccer dropped the 2-1 game against the Spartans on Friday night at Hodges Stadium.Â
GOALS
UPST: 13' - Emelie Valenciano (Leah Tyson)
UNF: 64' - Thaiss Reiss (Unassisted)
UPST: 84' - Delaney Bussey (Isabella Burns)
HOW IT HAPPENED
CONFER'S CORNER
"Soccer is a cruel game sometimes. What it comes down to is that Upstate finished their two best chances. We had 26 shots and only one goal. I give credit Upstate - they worked hard and their goalkeeper was fantastic. She made two great saves for them that kept them in the game. I'm not disappointed in the way we played, we created our chances, but I've been telling the team all year that there is going to come a game that we don't finish our chances and its going to catch up to us. It did tonight. We just gotta bounce back for a big game on Sunday. Our team continues to battle and I never questioned their heart, their desire to win and sometimes its a cruel sport. Now we have to move on and get ready for Sunday."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Florida (7-3, 1-1 ASUN) dominated on shots, 26-5, but failed to finish its chances.
- USC Upstate (6-5-1, 1-0-1 ASUN) got its first opportunity when it broke down the UNF defense and Leah Tyson found a streaking Emelie Valenciano into the box. Valenciano then finished the pass into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
- The Ospreys had 13 shots in the opening frame, but could not convert and headed into the half down 1-0.
- After several offensive pushes in the second, UNF found the back of the net when freshman Thais Reiss beat a pair of defenders inside the box and slipped the ball past keeper Brooke Bailey to knot the score.
- Late in the second stanza, the Spartans took advantage of a transition and took the ball deep into UNF territory. Isabella Burns crossed the ball from the left side to a group of players and it found its way to Delaney Bussey who knocked it in for the game winner.
- Down 2-1, North Florida kept turning on the pressure but could not find the back of the net as Upstate took the win.Â
