Women's Tennis Opens Season in South Carolina

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida women's tennis kicks off its 2017-18 slate with a trip to South Carolina where it faces off with Mercer, MTSU, Liberty and Winthrop beginning on Friday at 11 a.m.

"We are very excited for the first tournament of the year," said head coach Mariana Cobra. "We have practiced hard in the preseason and are looking for it to pay off. We will see very strong teams this weekend and it will provide us an opportunity to see where we are during the early part of the year. I am really looking forward to getting better after every match."

On Friday, each team will play two hidden dual matches per team. Saturday's action will feature one hidden dual match per team. The invitational concludes on Sunday with individual championship matchups for singles and doubles based on point accumulation.

The Ospreys are bringing all seven of their roster players to Columbia including newcomers Eva Nyikos and Florencia Rossi.

A pair of seniors in Luisa Intert and Irina Karangozishvili lead the squad who helped North Florida win its third straight ASUN Conference Championship last April. Intert is a three-time ASUN All-Conference performer and is looking to have a strong senior season. Karangozishvili went 19-10 in overall singles play last season.

ASUN All-Conference performer, Rafaela Gomez, returns to make an impact for UNF after posting a team-best 23-10 record last year. Junior Kinga Gartner, who earned all-conference second team accolades, also returns after a successful outing in doubles with former player, Michelle Valdez, as the duo posted a 14-3 mark in 2016-17. Sophomore Lucia Montaño, an ASUN All-Freshman selection, rounds out the roster after playing primarily doubles as a rookie.

After the opening weekend, North Florida takes a short break before heading to the Bedford Cup where it will face off with the other Florida universities around the state.
