COLUMBIA, S.C. - North Florida women's tennis had a strong showing in the opening day of the South Carolina Invite on Friday at the USC Tennis Courts.
"It was a good first day in the fall. We got better as the matches went on. It was good to see the way we competed," said head coach Mariana Cobra. "The doubles looked good, but we need more communication still, but I am looking forward to seeing where we go. We liked how the girls handled being down at certain points in the set and didn't give up. In the fall we are looking for their ability to come back when situations are not ideal."
Facing off with Liberty in singles early in the day, the Ospreys picked up three wins at the No. 1, 2 and 4 positions. Rafaela Gomez grabbed a quick 6-2, 6-4 win against Ashely Bongart at court 1. Senior Irina Karangozishivili followed suit with a three-set victory, 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 in the No. 2 spot. Classmate Luise Intert battled to her win in the No. 4 position as she won two tie breakers, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).
In doubles play, Intert and Gomez paired up at court two for a 6-2 win against Mercer. North Florida then grabbed another win in the No. 3 position as Lucia Montano and Kinga Gartner picked up a 6-4 win.
With the victories, North Florida now has three points from doubles and 14 points in singles play.
UNF now takes on Winthrop in singles at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
