The Short Story:Â North Florida scored runs in three of the first four innings en route to a 7-2 home victory over Savannah State on Wednesday night at Harmon Stadium. The win snapped a two-game skid for the Ospreys and gave UNF the regular season sweep over the Tigers.
LEADING OFFÂ
- North Florida scored four runs in their opening at bat and that would prove all the scoring they needed in earning a win in their first home midweek game of the year
- Yahir Gurrola led the offensive attack posting a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored
- Rey Gonzalez (2) also notched multiple hits in the contest, which saw the Ospreys bang out 11 hits on the night but only three over the final 4.2 innings
- Chris Berry, Alex Merritt and Wesley Weeks each collected two RBI in the victory
- Adam Polansky picked up his first win on the mound after working six innings, allowing no runs and just three hits while striking out three
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- UNF's first five batters of the game all reached base in the opening frame helping the Ospreys plate 4 runs. Yahir Gurolla led off with a walk and then stole second. Chris Thibideau followed with a single to right and he advanced to second on a fielding error by Savannah State. Chris Berry then drove both runners in with a single through the right side. Alex Merritt walked and then Blake Voyles sacrifice bunt was misplayed by the Tiger pitcher allowing the Ospreys to load the bases. Wesley Weeks drove in one run with groundout to third and Rey Gonzalez singled to drive in the final run of the inning.
- After a scoreless 2nd inning, Merritt and Voyles drew back-to-back walks to start the third, bringing a pitching change for SSU. Patrick Ervin executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Weeks then hit a high chopper to third base that drove in the Osprey's fifth run of the game.
- In the fourth, Gurolla led off with a single and moved to third on a single by Dalton Board, who then stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. With one out, Merritt plated both runs with a single up the middle.
- The two squads traded scoreless innings for the next three frames, until Savannah State finally got on the scoreboard in the 8th. The Tigers used a pair of hits and a UNF error to end the Osprey's shutout bid.
- The Tigers got two runners on base in the ninth but Matthew Naylor struck out a pair of batters to end the threat and lock down the victory.Â
WHAT'S NEXT
The Ospreys will host Dallas Baptist for a three-game series on the weekend. Games are scheduled for Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.). The series marks the final non-conference weekend set for UNF this season.
