The Short Story: North Florida held off a solid Dallas Baptist baseball squad for an 8-7 series opening victory on Friday night at Harmon Stadium. Yahir Gurolla went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Ospreys and Anthony Delaney led a trio of relievers in four scoreless innings of work for the win.
LEADING OFFÂ
- Yahir Gurrola led the offensive attack posting a 3-for-5 performance at the plate highlighted by his team-leading 5th homer of the year. He collected hits in his first three plate appearances and scored three of the teams runs while also recording a key outfield assist.
- Patrick Ervin and Wesley Weeks joined Gurrola with multi-hit performances as each player tallied two hits on the night. Weeks smacked his first career dinger in the Ospreys five-run first inning explosion
- Austin Drury set the first six batters he faced down in order before battling over the next three innings of work. In his shortest outing of the season, Drury allowed 7 hits and six earned runs with three walks, but he also struck out 7
- Anthony Delaney followed Drury on the mound and worked 3.1 scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit while striking out three... Eddie Miller and Matthew Naylor each set down the one batter they faced in the 9th inning
- Ospreys finished with 9 hits on the night with six infield hits
- Dallas Baptist committed four errors on the night accounting for six of UNF's runs on the night
- The two teams combined to score at least one run in each of the first six innings of play
- UNF improves to 5-0 all-time against DBU
- North Florida has now won the weekend opener in five of their six series this season
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Ospreys started quickly getting 5 runs in the bottom of the first benefiting from a pair of DBU errors. It could have been more as UNF had a sacrifice bunt popped up and another run thrown out at the plate. Yahir Gurrola opened the game with a single and moved to second when Chris Thibideau drew a walk. Alex Merritt hit a high chopper to third but the Patriot's throw to second went wide of the bag into right field allowing the first run to score. Blake Voyles followed with a sharp grounder to short that was mishandled for a second straight DBU error and run number two for UNF. Patrick Ervin came up and singled moving Voyles to third. Wesley Weeks then cleared the bases after blasting his first homerun of the year over the left field wall.
- UNF tacked on another run in the second when Gurolla again singled and moved into scoring position after a wild pitch and a single by Chris Berry. With two outs, Berry took off towards second drawing a throw down and while Dallas Baptist attempted to tag him out, Gurolla raced home and crossed the plate before Berry was tagged.
- Dallas Baptist got back into the game with four runs in the top of the third as a pair of walks proved costly for UNF starter Austin Drury. With two outs, Jameson Hannah doubled to the left field gap driving in two and then Austin Listi drove a pitch over the scoreboard for his 7th homer of the year.
- The Patriots used a two-out RBI single by Luke Stratman to even the score at 6-6 in the top of the fourth. Tim Millard led off the frame with a double and Matt Duce walked before UNF collected a pair of outs.
- In the bottom of the 4th, Gurolla collected his third hit of the game when he launched a ball over the left field fence for a solo homer. It marked his team-leading 5th long ball.
- The third DBU error aided the Ospreys in the bottom of the sixth as Merritt singled to start things off and moved around diamond on a pair of ground outs before a throwing error from the Patriot shortstop provided the chance for an insurance run.
- The Patriots had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the sixth but a double play that included an outfield assist from Gurolla limited the damage. DBU did get one run after back-to-back walks from relief pitcher Anthony Delaney
- After six innings of offensive fireworks, the final three innings were highlighted by stellar relief pitching as only four combined runners reached base
- With a one run lead in the 9th, Delaney struck out the batter he faced and gave way to Eddie Miller, who got DBU's standout Jameson Hannah to pop a check swing ball into the air where a diving Blake Voyles got the second out of the frame. Matthew Naylor then entered for the Ospreys and struck out pinch hitter Evan Sandmann after Austin Listi reached base on a walk.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Ospreys will continue their weekend series with Dallas Baptist on Saturday (1 p.m.) before closing the set at 12 Noon on Sunday. The series marks the final non-conference weekend set for UNF this season.
