The Short Story: The North Florida baseball team overcame an early deficit but dropped a hard fought 7-3 decision on the road at USF on Tuesday night. The loss snapped the Ospreys three-game win streak in midweek games.
LEADING OFFÂ
- The Ospreys tallied 10 hits on the night with three players recording multiple hit performances led by a 3-for-4 outing by Chris Berry, which included a homerun
- Berry extended his current on-base streak to 11 games with his solid outing at the plate
- Yahir Gurrola pushed his hit streak to six games with a pair of hits on the night, while Wes Weeks also notched a pair of hits
- North Florida starter Cooper Bradford scattered four hits over 5.0 innings of work while striking out 6 and allowing just two runs
- The win marked the 19th straight for USF and also halted a three-game win streak for the Ospreys against the Bulls
- UNF and USF will meet again on Apr. 19 at Harmon Stadium
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- USF got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. With one out and the bases loaded, the Bulls' Garrett Zech notched a 2-run single providing the home squad the early advantage.
- The Ospreys cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth as Blake Voyles drew an inning-opening walk and moved to third on a double by Alex Merritt. Voyles would score on a Patrick Ervin single.
- In the fifth, Chris Berry launched a solo homer, his third round tripper of the season, to knot the score at 2-2.
- UNF grabbed their first lead in the seventh following a two-out, bases loaded walk drawn by Chris Thibideau. Wes Weeks doubled and both Berry and Christian Diaz earned walks in front of Thibideau's base on balls.
- The Bulls answered in the bottom of the 7th with a four-run outburst capped by a three-run homerun by David Villar
- USF added an insurance run in their half of the 8th. Kevin Merrell singled and stole second in front of a two-out RBI single from Luke Borders.
- Ospreys get a couple hits in the 9th but unable to close the deficit.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Ospreys open up a four-game home stand Wednesday against Savannah State at 5 p.m. UNF will also host Dallas Baptist for a three-game weekend series.
