NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sixth-seeded Stetson (28-29) vaulted itself into the Atlantic Sun Conference title game with a 7-6 victory over North Florida (39-18). The loss snapped an eight-game UNF win streak and pits the Ospreys against FGCU Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in a win or go home scenario.
Â
The Hatters scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single up the middle by Kevin Fagan that scored John Fussell. The Ospreys left the tying run on third base in the bottom of the ninth after Stetson Reliever Walker Scheller came in to record the final out and registered his 11th save of the year. The Ospreys left 10 runners on base and were 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position in the contest.
Â
The last four A-Sun Tournament losses for North Florida all have been by one run.
Â
The Hatters were aided by a big time performance from third baseman Cory Reid who hit two home runs, including a three-run shot in the third inning to give Stetson a 3-2 lead. He finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs.
Â
After Stetson scored five-straight runs to open up a 5-2 advantage, the Ospreys chipped away and eventually knotted the game up at six in the fifth inning. Freshman Chris Berry delivered the game-tying, two-out RBI single up the middle that scored Nick Karmeris and Chris Thibideau.
Â
Kameris put together his team-leading 23rd multi-hit game, finishing the game 2-for-5 with a run scored. Senior Corbin Olmstead was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored. He doubled to lead-off the ninth inning, his second ninth inning double of the day. He had four hits in nine at bats including three doubles between the two games played today. Olmstead has now reached base safely in 13-straight games.
Â
As a team, the Ospreys collected 10 hits for the 35th time this season. Today's loss was only the fourth when totaling 10 or more hits and the first loss with 10 or more hits since falling to No. 1 Florida on March 9.
Â
Stetson is now 3-0 in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, defeating the top three seeds (Kennesaw State, North Florida and Jacksonville) to reach their first title game since 2006. The Ospreys swept the Hatters in the regular season at Harmon Stadium. The Hatters were limited to just five runs the entire series and take a game from the Ospreys for the first time in the last eight attempts.
Â
The Ospreys will go to the loser's bracket to face FGCU who defeated host Lipscomb, 8-6 in the final game of day three. The winner of tomorrow's game will go on to face Stetson in the title game. Stetson has yet to lose in the tournament which means if they fall on Saturday, a final game will be played on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. EST to determine a champion.
