5/20/2016 10:38:00 AM | Men's Track, Women's Track
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A group of four North Florida track and field athletes were among the throngs of qualifiers named for the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary to be held May 26-28 at UNF's Hodges Stadium. The Osprey qualifiers were Nick Morken, Bobby Harris, Fynn Timm and Alyssa Young.
The NCAA East Preliminary is the opening round of the NCAA Championship event and features the Top 48 ranked athletes in 38 individual events as well as four relay competitions. The top 12 performers in each event advance to the NCAA Championships on June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
Morken, a sophomore middle-distance runner, qualified for the 1500m for the second consecutive year while sophomore teammate Bobby Harris, a high jumper, is also making his second appearance in the East Prelim. Timm, the recently named ASUN Outstanding Performer for Outdoor Track, qualified in the 3,000m steeplechase. All three athletes set school records in their events this year and are all coming off of winning gold medals in their events at the ASUN Outdoor Championships. Young, a sophomore high jumper, is making her postseason debut having finished runner-up at ASUN Championships.
"We are excited to be hosting the NCAA East Prelim, but even more excited to have four of our athletes with the chance to compete in the event on their home track," said head coach Jeff Pigg, who has now guided nine UNF athletes to an NCAA Regional. "Nick gained valuable experience while competing in last year's regional and hopes to build on that experience and qualify for nationals. He has had a very good season and is running really well right now. Bobby also competed last year and has made some nice improvements this year. He enters the meet with the fourth best mark and could advance to nationals with a very solid day of jumping. Fynn has a very good time in the steepelchase for a freshman and the East Region race will be an exciting opportunity for him. Alyssa has made great improvements this year and we are thrilled that she was able to qualify. This will be a exciting learning and competition experience for her."
Morken will be the first to compete for the Ospreys as the opening round of the 1500m is scheduled for Thursday (May 26) at 6 p.m., with the Top 24 finishers moving into the quarterfinal race at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday (May 28). Timm is slated to race at 9:30 p.m. on Friday (May 27) while Young participates in the women's high jump at 5 p.m. Harris will compete in the men's high jump at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
