JACKSONVILLE -- The North Florida Track and Field teams claimed four event titles Friday on the opening day of the Atlantic Sun Championships at Hodges Stadium. UNF swept the titles in the 10,000m races while also winning the men's 3,000m Steeplechase and the women's pole vault.
On the women's side, senior Kelly Hensley got the scoring started for UNF earning a bronze medal finish in the 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 11:17. Freshman teammate Audrey Carpenter also scored points finishing fifth in 11:40. Sophmore Eden Meyer captured the title in the 10,000m with a dominating performance in 36:14, while her sister Grace posted a PR of 39:18 to finish in seventh. Senior Megan Walker capped off the night, posting a 3.87 (12-08.25) mark en route to winning the pole vault title. Walker finished the season as both the indoor and outdoor conference champion in the event.
Fynn Timm and Manny Velasquez finished first and second in the 3000m Steeplechase to get the Osprey men's teams rolling. The pair finished in 9:13.16 and 9:13.37, respectively, while teammate Bradley Langenberg also got in the scoring column with his fifth-place finish in 9:41. Junior Michael Damato, who ran the 10,000m for the first time in his career, collected the gold medal with a time of 31:36. His strong performance paced a quartet of runners finishing in the top six of the event as Brad Hort (32:21) was fourth followed by Justin Bryan (32:24) and Travis Nichols (32:49).
"We had a really good first day," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "I loved the way we competed and we were able to post some solid times. Eden and Mike both looked really good in the 10,000s. I thought Fynn and Manny ran great races as well. I'm really proud of how Kelly and Megan were able to finish their careers with impressive showings. It says a lot about our determination to have four of the top six finishers in the 10,000m because that race is all about effort. All four of those guys along with Eden and Grace all competed hard."
Competition at the ASun Championship concludes with Saturday's slate of events scheduled to start at 9 a.m. with the multi-events. Field events start at 11 a.m. with running events set to begin at 5 p.m. Live results of the event are available online at HalfmileTiming.com.
