
Dewees Selected in Second Round by Chicago Cubs

SECAUCUS, N.J. – The Chicago Cubs took North Florida outfielder Donnie Dewees with the 47th pick of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player draft. The redshirt sophomore becomes the highest selected player since Todd Dunn went in the first round in 1993.

Dewees, the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper First Team All-American selection, put together a monumental year at the plate for the Ospreys vaulting his draft stock. He led the country in hits (106), runs scored (88), slugging percentage (.749) and total bases (188). His .422 batting average was the second highest in the nation and he ranked in the top-10 in ten different categories.

He becomes the 44th North Florida baseball player to be selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft in 28 years of the program's existence.

The smooth-swinging lefthander finishes his three-year stint at North Florida with the program's highest career batting average at .382. He shattered school single season records in 2015 for runs, hits, triples (8) and total bases.

Coming into the draft he was 35th best prospect according to MLB.com and the 66th ranked prospect by in Baseball America. Dewees was also a semifinalist for two of college baseball's most prestigious awards, the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, both given out to the country's top player.
