FORT MYERS, Fla. – The North Florida softball team rallied late but it was ultimately the Stetson Hatters who prevailed 5-4 in an elimination contest in the Atlantic Sun Championship Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla., ending the Ospreys' season.
Â
The Ospreys close the year at 31-28 after going to the postseason since missing out on the tournament in 2014.
Â
Stetson started off with a 2-0 lead after the top of the first with a two-run home run to right field.
Â
The Ospreys responded right back with two runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Katie Mandigo singled down the right field line to score senior Kelly Wilson. Freshman Alex Arciola followed up with a triple to center field, scoring Mandigo and tying the game at 2-2.
Â
Stetson took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third from a sacrifice fly, the Hatters then stifled the Ospreys' lineup for the next two innings.
Â
Junior Stacy McClelland put the Ospreys back on top with a two-run blast over the right field fence. McClelland's home run not only gave North Florida the lead, but was her 13th of the season, tying the single-season school record.
Â
Stetson then tied up the game at 4-4 with back-to-back doubles. The Hatters then took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh with a RBI double to the left center gap. Stetson hung on in the bottom half of the inning to win the game and eliminate the Ospreys with the final score of 5-4.
Â
Notes: Kelly Wilson closed her season with 33 stolen bases, second in the single-season school record books and five off of the school record.
