JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida softball team edged conference foe Northern Kentucky in both games of their conference doubleheader Friday night at the UNF Softball Complex.
Â
The Ospreys (23-19, 5-6 A-Sun) snapped their seven-game losing streak, winning game one 3-1 and taking game two with a walk-off 11-10 win.
Â
"Our girls showed a lot of character in game two. Even though we were down five at the end of the game they stayed confident and kept their heads," said coach Marcie Hickey. "Our bats came through big time. We put three runs on the board in each of the last three innings. Shelby Duncan picked us up with two outs in the seventh and Alex Arciola had an amazing slide at the plate to end it."
Â
In game one, The Ospreys started off with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third from a RBI double by junior Shelby Duncan, the Norse then tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the top of the sixth.
Â
Senior Kelly Wilson notched the eventual game winner with a two-run shot to left-center, taking a 3-1 lead with her fourth homer of the year.
Â
Senior Kayla Goff earned the win for the Ospreys, improving her overall record to 11-7.
Â
Game two saw a total of 21 runs, 27 hits, and nine pitching changes between the two squads.
Â
The Norse held a 7-2 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth, when Duncan belted her third home run of the season and cut the lead to 7-4, freshman Ashley Niesman followed with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 7-5.
Â
The Norse brought their advantage back up to five with a 10-5 lead going in to the bottom of the sixth. Following a run scored on a wild pitch, Stacy McClelland hit her 10th home run of the season on a two-run shot to right-center which cut the Northern Kentucky 10-8 going into the final frame.
Â
The Ospreys first cut the lead to 10-9 when Niesman doubled down the left field line, scoring senior Abby Tewey. Duncan followed with a single to left field, scoring Niesman and freshman Alex Arciola, who beat the tag for the win.
