FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The No. 4 seeded North Florida sand volleyball team advanced into the second day of play at the 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship after splitting a pair of matches Friday at Estero Community Park.
The Ospreys (10-11) opened tournament play with a hard fought 3-2 decision over tournament host No. 5 seed Florida Gulf Coast. Top-seeded Stetson then topped UNF, 5-0, sending the squad into elimination bracket play on Saturday morning.
Against FGCU, North Florida's No. 5 tandem of Ebony Gunn and Emily Davanzo overcame a 21-11 loss in the first set with a pair of set victories (21-17, 15-10) to earn the Osprey's first point and even the match at 1-1. No. 1 duo Cari Whitmire and Cameron McGuire posted a straight set win (23-21, 21-13) for the squad's second point.
The match came down to the No. 2 pairings with UNF's tandem of Tessa Alyman and Tanner Garbutt outlasting their Eagle challengers for a three-set victory, 21-9, 15-21, 15-10.
In the Stetson match, UNF fell in all five pairings with the duos of Gunn/Davanzo (21-18, 21-18) and Alyman/Garbutt (21-15, 21-18) playing the closest contests.
North Florida begins day two play at the ASun Championship with an 11 a.m. rematch against FGCU. The loser is eliminated and the winner advances to face the loser of Saturday's opening match between Stetson and Mercer.
