ORLANDO, Fla. -- In just the program's third season of competition, the North Florida women's golf team fired the best score in the final round en route to finishing runner-up Tuesday in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at Reunion Golf Resort.
The Ospreys, who erased a nine-shot deficit, closed out competition with a final round 4-over par 292 for a three-round total of 902. Both scores ranked among the program's top five performances for a single round and tournament score.
Junior Mary Dawson led the closing surge for UNF by shooting a 1-under 71 to finish tied for fifth overall at 222. Her third day push allowed her to earn All-Tournament accolades. Dawson was joined in the Top 10 by junior teammate Emelie Alpe, who carded a final round even-par 72 to finish seventh at 224.
"I am extremely proud of the way the team perserved and finished as runner-up at the A-Sun Championships," said head coach Joanne Berglund. "They went out today with a goal to finish in the top two and they definitely played with heart and determination to accomplish that goal. It was an incredible ending to a very successful year. It was also great to have two players finish in the Top 10. It was also awesome to see Mary shoot an under-par round to have a top five finish and earn a spot on the All-Tournament team."
Sophomore Megan Wilshire narrowly missed a Top 10 finish, ending the tournament tied for 11th at 227 including a final round 74. Junior Kelly Aylwin shot a 75 on the last day to finish tied for 18th at 231, while sophomore Nathalie Nygren rounded out the Osprey performers in a tie for 27th at 239 following a round of 81 on Tuesday.
Kennesaw State led wire-to-wire in capturing the team championship with a final score of 872. UNF was second followed by Florida Gulf Coast (910), Jacksonville (918), Stetson (923), Lipscomb (939), Northern Kentucky (941) and USC Upstate (955). KSU's Dulcie Sverdloff earned the individual medalist crown with a 1-under 215.
The Atlantic Sun Championship marked the end of the season for the Ospreys, who also earned a point in the River City Rumble competition by finishing ahead of crosstown rival JU.
