JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis picked up its third-straight Atlantic Sun shutout, defeating Kennesaw State 4-0 at the UNF Tennis Complex in a match that was shortened due to rain.
Â
"I wish we could have finished the last three matches because it was a great opportunity for our seniors to build some confidence," said head coach Audra Cohen. "However, I'm very happy we were able to get an overall result before the rain started."
Â
The teams planned to play all six singles matches. However, rain rolled through the Jacksonville area shortly after UNF recorded the match-winning point. After waiting 20 minutes of a rain delay, the match was called and the remaining three singles matches went unfinished.
Â
The Ospreys stormed past Kennesaw State in the doubles competition in order to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Luise Intert and Rebeca Pereira captured the day's first doubles win with an 8-2 victory over Abbie Grant and Ashleigh De Wet on the No. 2 court. Quetzali Vazquez and Marina Cunningham blanked Alexandra Mercado and Cristina Martin 8-0 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.
Â
In singles, UNF rattled off two-set victories at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 positions. Intert overpowered Grant on the No. 6 court, posting a 6-0, 6-0 shutout and giving UNF the 2-0 lead in the match. The Ospreys pushed their lead to three after Michelle Valdez's 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Jana Hueckinghaus at No. 2 singles. Vazquez won the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Isabela Castro at No. 4 singles.
Â
UNF returns to action on Saturday against USC Upstate at 10 a.m., at the UNF Tennis Complex. The match will be Senior Day with the Ospreys recognizing Marina Cunningham, Taylor Hollander, Rebeca Pereira and Esther Zuniga.
