Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis pushed its winning streak to eight and ended a stretch of four matches in five days with a 6-1 victory over George Washington on a sunny day at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Â
"We made a few adjustments in doubles and I was happy with how well we adapted to those changes," said head coach Audra Cohen. "Overall, I'm happy with how we performed in the last four matches. We are all excited for a well-earned day off tomorrow."
Â
UNF started out by taking the doubles point. Michelle Valdez and Quetzali Vazquez captured the first doubles win with a 6-4 triumph over Teodora Radosavljevic and Allison Hansen at No. 3 doubles. Taylor Hollander and Esther Zuniga took the doubles point for the Ospreys by defeating Lana Robins and Marie-Louise Decamps 6-3.
Â
"Esther and Taylor had not played with each other yet this season," said Cohen. "Today, they were great together."
Â
The Ospreys emerged victorious with the first five completed singles matches. Valdez won at No. 3 singles after Decamps retired from the match. Valdez had won the first set 6-2, and then Decamps retired prior to the start of the second set.
Â
"Michelle played super aggressive, which led to her opponent retiring from the match," said Cohen.
Â
Zuniga, who was announced as the Atlantic Sun's Player of the Week earlier on Wednesday, pushed UNF's lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Robins on the No. 2 court. Rebeca Pereira had the match-winning point at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph against Hansen.
Â
Julia Sbircea picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win against Egle Jakuciunaite on the No. 6 court. Vazquez finished soon after Sbircea, adding a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Grace Egger at No. 4 singles.
Â
"Quetzali and Rebeca played smart and aggressive tennis," said Cohen. "Julia stepped up for her first match in a dual match and she played well."
Â
George Washington's lone point came with Radosavljevic's 6-2, 6-3 win over Hollander at No. 1 singles.
Â
UNF returns to action on Saturday against South Alabama. Match time is set for 11 a.m., at the UNF Tennis Complex. Admission is free to all UNF home matches.
