PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The No. 28-ranked North Florida men's golf team ended an up-and-down opening day of play at the 7th annual Sea Best Invitational in fourth place after posting rounds of 301-291 on Dye's Valley Course of TPC Sawgrass.
The Ospreys finished the first 36-holes of play with a score of 592, just eight shots behind day one leader No. 15 North Carolina at 584. Senior Joey Petronio was the squad's top performer on Monday finishing tied for ninth with rounds of 73-72=145 (+5).
"We played pretty poorly for the about seven hours today but finished nicely over the last two hours," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "Our solid finish put us in place to have an opportunity with a strong final round tomorrow. I thought Joey (Petronio) did a nice job of playing steady all day, which helped keep us in the mix."
Juniors Austin Padova and Taylor Hancock helped spark UNF's second round 10-shot improvement firing rounds of 71 (+1) and 73 (+3), respectively.
Redshirt freshman Dillon Woods ended the first day of play tied for 23rd at 149 (74-75) while Padova is tied for 25th at 150 (79-71) and Hancock is tied for 28th at 151 (78-73). Sophomore Osten Waite, making his season debut for UNF, rounded out the lineup in 77th at 164 (76-88). Playing as an individual, junior Joe Stepnes posted rounds of 75-80=155 to finish the day tied for 51st.
The Tar Heels hold a three-stroke advantage over No. 3 Florida State (587) heading into the final round. Florida is in third at 588 with UNF and No. 30 UNLV and McNeese State tied for fifth at 594.
Tournament action at the Sea Best concludes with a final round of 18 holes starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Live scoring is available online at Golfstat.com.
