Five players score in double figures
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida women's basketball team was on fire on both sides of the court as the Ospreys shut down Trinity Baptist, 97-30, on Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.
"I am really excited about how we played," said first-year head coach Darrick Gibbs. "We really focused this week on defensive rebounding after the Georgia State game, and holding any team to 30 points and getting 61 rebounds shows that it carried over. We shot the ball extremely well and had a lot of career-highs. I am proud of how they came out and battled, competed and that the things we emphasized throughout the week showed throughout the game."
UNF's 97 points are the most scored since 2011 when the Ospreys dropped 91 against USC Upstate. The team also set a Division I record with 61 rebounds led by strong performances from senior Kadesia Johnson and junior Karrah Johnson. Kadesia Johnson recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Karrah Johnson had her first double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Three other players joined in double figure scoring with sophomore Sierra Shepherd leading the way with a career-best 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting including four treys. The guard also dished out seven helpers and grabbed three steals. Junior Taru Madekivi and freshman Hadley Kiefer both recorded 19 points. Madekivi narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards, while also passing out four assists.
In a season-high 19 minutes from freshman Katie Meckus, the forward recorded three blocks, five rebounds, five points and a steal. Junior Claire Ioannidis had a season-best four assists and three rebounds, while Maiya Rumph also had two assists as UNF dished out a season-best 20 assists.
The Ospreys shot a season-high 48.7 percent from the floor, while holding the Eagles to just a 19 percent clip. The 30 points are the lowest amount scored by a team against UNF this season and second least in the record book.
North Florida led from start to finish and the final score was its biggest lead of the game. At the half, the Ospreys held a 49-17 edge after scoring a season-best 30 points in the first quarter.
UNF has a quick turnaround to prepare for Alabama who is 8-1 on the season. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m. in Tuscaloosa at historic Coleman Coliseum.
