SARASOTA, Fla. – The North Florida men's tennis team had three representatives at the annual Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate on Friday. The Ospreys captured wins in both the doubles and singles draws.
"We had a really tough competitive day at the courts," said Head Coach Mark Finnegan. "In the morning we had some amazing wins beating two excellent singles players from a very good Minnesota team while also taking down a solid michigan team in doubles. Unfortunately we wore down a little in the evening with some tough three set loses to quality opponents."
Â
The duo of freshman Jonathan Deautriell and sophomore Lasse Muscheites won their opening match in the men's open doubles draw defeating the University of Michigan's Lubomir T. Cub and Tyler S. Gardiner, 8-7. The combo was forced to retire due to injury in the quarterfinals against the second-seeded Max Andrew and Christian Langmo.
Â
Deautriell went on to win in the men's open singles draw in the round of 32 with a comeback, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Minnesota's Justyn Levin. In the round of 16 he won the first set against top-seeded Tom Colautti of Princeton but dropped the second set, 4-6 and lost in a tiebreaker in the final set.
Â
Muscheites also added to the team win column with a win in the round of 32 when he defeated Marino Alpeza of Minnesota in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3). He also won the first set of his round of 16 match but dropped the final two sets to third-seeded, Max Andrews of Miami.
Â
After losing his round of 32 match redshirt sophomore Alberto De Meo was victorious in the consolation bracket over Vasily Kichigin of the College of Charleston (4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5)). He is still alive in his bracket and will take on Oliver Landert of FGCU tomorrow.
