JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Women's Soccer team fell in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Championship to JU, who won the penalty kick shootout 6-5 following a 1-1 draw at the end of the two overtime periods.
Â
The Ospreys close their season at 4-11-2, while Jacksonville moves on to face Lipscomb in the semifinals of the A-Sun Championship in Fort Myers, Fla.
Â
"First off, congrats to JU. Once again, just like last week it was a competitive game," said coach Robin Confer. "Throughout the season this team has played with so much heart and fight. We have been in so many close games throughout the season and the margin of victory is so slim. I'm just so proud of the effort put forth tonight and you hate to have a game decided by PK's."
Â
The Ospreys out-shot the Dolphins by a margin of 31-15. The Ospreys also took the edge in shots-on-goal, 8-2.
Â
In the first half, the teams traded possession, with the Ospreys securing several chances. In the 22nd minute, sophomore Katy Mixon got a breakaway chance in the middle of the field into the box, but the Jacksonville keeper was able to get her foot on the ball for the clear.
Â
In the 27th minute, junior Alexis Bredeau fired a shot from just outside the box on the right side, but the Dolphin keeper was able to make the diving save.
Â
Heading into the second half in a stalemate, JU broke the tie in the 56th minute, when Cassie Elmore found the right corner of the net with a high ball that went just past the extended arm of Victoria Ekeli.
Â
The Ospreys battled hard for 25 minutes until sophomore Sarah Wasser delivered a high cross into the box, where sophomore Jess Kinlaw leaped up to get her head on the ball, finding the right side of the net for the equalizer.
Â
The Ospreys and Dolphins remained deadlocked at 1-1 through two overtime periods, leading to a penalty kick shootout.
Â
Following three goals by each team, junior Susie Ford made a leaping save to give the Ospreys a chance to take the lead, but Jacksonville's Sarah Wicks responded with a save of her own. The teams traded goals until Ford's kick curved just wide of the net, resulting in the Dolphins taking the round 6-5.
Â
Seniors Lanie Keating and Ashley Carmean both had two shots on goal for the Ospreys, with Keating leading the team in total shots with seven.
Â
"Our seniors, Ashley, Lanie and Zakiya (Chambers-Hunter) have been a huge part of our program and will be missed," added Confer.
