JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida men's soccer team is on the cusp of the program's first Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship. A win in the season finale against USC Upstate (5-5-1, 1-2-1 A-Sun) on Saturday night at Hodges Stadium will tie the Ospreys with FGCU for the 2015 crown.
Â
Senior Night: Prior to Saturday's game, the Ospreys will honor their 10 seniors, all of which played a part in back-to-back Atlantic Sun Championship game appearances and the resurgence of North Florida men's soccer. A ceremony to honor the seniors will start approximately 10 minutes before kickoff.
Win or Lose: No matter what the outcome of Saturday night's game, the Ospreys will be no lower than No. 2 seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. A playoff game will be hosted at Hodges Stadium next weekend for the first time since 2009. In the event that the Ospreys erupt for a school-record nine goals against USC Upstate on Saturday, North Florida would overcome an idle FGCU in the standings and capture the tournament's top seed.
Midweek Recap: The Ospreys fell for the first time in the month of October on Wednesday night at the hands of FAU. The rain-soaked contest featured an hour weather delay at the halftime break. After resuming play, the Owls scored on their only shot on goal, a header by Thomas Gallits in the 56th minute. A total of 20 Ospreys were able to see action including goalkeepers Tord Pedersen and Juanes Fajardo.
Wild Year: USC Upstate forward Gordon Wild has put together a remarkable year offensively. The freshman sensation is tied for the national lead in goals with 14. He burst on the scene in early September with a four-goal performance against Presbyterian and went on to score in each of the next four games. In conference play he has been held to five points (2g, 1a), all against Jacksonville on Oct. 3.
About USC Upstate: The Spartans are coming off a 4-0 loss at home to FGCU last weekend. Their lone conference victory came against Jacksonville on Oct. 3. USC Upstate is seeking their first goal in 204 minutes which also was against the Dolphins. Besides Wild, the Ospreys will have to be aware of sophomore Leon Schwarzer who has found the back of the net six times and is the league leader with five assists.
