Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Janeá Williams grabbed a critical offensive rebound and then scored the game-winning basket in the final second of overtime as University of North Florida women's basketball emerged with a 63-62 victory over UMKC on Tuesday at UNF Arena. The victory marks the third-straight year in which the Ospreys won their non-conference finale.
Â
"Their grit is the one thing that this team shows every night," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We talk to them about playing until the final horn and that's what they do."
Â
UMKC went up 62-61 when Calli White connected on a free throw at six seconds. Flo Ward drove the length of the court and attempted a layup. Williams snagged the rebound, leading to her game-winner.
Â
"Coach has said to not stop playing until the buzzer sounds," said Williams. "I saw Flo driving and I went for the rebound because I had not heard the buzzer. We had time to get the shot up."
Â
"We had drawn up a late-game play and it was executed very well," said Tappmeyer. "Flo got all the way to the rim and she's really upset about missing the layup. But Janeá is really hard to block out and she was on it, caught it, and put it in. That was a huge put-back for us."
Â
Destinee Smith scored a game-high 28 points, which tied a UNF Division I-era scoring record. Jackie Biek and Brittany Kirkland are the only other two Division I Ospreys to score 28 points. For Smith, it was her third 20-point game this season and bested her career-high by one point. She previously scored 27 points earlier this season at Florida.
Â
Williams registered a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double – the first double-double of her career. Paulina Zaveckaite grabbed 13 rebounds.
Â
Tuesday was UNF's first overtime game since winning at ETSU 74-69 on Feb. 11, 2012. UNF shot 39.7 percent (27-for-68) for the game and narrowly out-rebounded UMKC, 42-41.
Â
White paced UMKC with 18 points, while Samantha Waldron tallied 14 points. Taylor Leathers added in 10 points. Kiana Law grabbed 12 rebounds.
Â
UMKC shot 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the field.
Â
Both teams faced poor shooting in the first half with both shooting below 30 percent. UNF lead by as many as five early on, taking a 10-5 advantage at 12:40 on a Smith jumper. UMKC erased the deficit and would ultimately also gain a five-point lead, going up 17-12 at 7:54, which was its first of three five-point cushions. UMKC's final five-point advantage came with 31 seconds left in the half. Kiana Law hit a jumper to make it 24-19, which was the score at halftime.
Â
UNF opened the second half on a 10-0 run to go up 29-24 at 14:44. The Ospreys eventually built up a 12-point advantage, taking a 43-31 lead on a Smith three-pointer at 7:17. UMKC chipped away at the Ospreys' lead. After UNF held a 49-39 lead at 3:13, UMKC answered with a 14-0 run to take a 53-49 advantage with 29 seconds to go. A jumper from Smith at 22 seconds brought the Ospreys to within two, but UMKC pushed its lead to five after connecting on three-of-four foul shots and held a 56-51 advantage with 11 seconds remaining.
Â
UNF erased that late five-point deficit in order to force overtime. Bailey Florin hit a jumper with six seconds to go. After a UMKC turnover, Amber Robinson nailed the game-tying three-pointer with 1.1 seconds to go to even the score at 56-56 and force overtime.
Â
UMKC struck first in overtime with White hitting a trey at 4:04. A Smith jumper at 3:32 pulled UNF to within one, but a Grace Mitchell layup at 2:36 allowed UMKC to regain a three-point cushion. Bailey Florin hit at 2:01 to deadlock the game at 61-61. Both teams had their chances over the next couple of minutes, before White got sent to the line.
