Sunday Results
Â
ORLANDO, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis ended the UCF Quad Tournament with six singles wins and two doubles victories on Sunday at the UCF Tennis Complex.
Â
"We compete well all weekend," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We play a lot of tight matches and we gained experience with the new ITA scoring. Heading home, we know what we have to work on to consistently win those tight matches in the future."
Â
The Ospreys got the day started by completing the three singles matches against UCF that were halted due to rain on Saturday. Marina Cunningham held on for a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win over Sofia Baptista at No. 2 singles. However, both Taylor Hollander and Esther Zuniga fell in their matches. Zuniga lost a 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 tie-break to Cortney Cesarini at No. 1, while Hollander dropped a 6-4, 6-4 match to Carolina Eberhart.
Â
"Today was a little awkward because we start many of the matches from the middle, which makes it tough to work your way into the match like we typically like to do," said Cohen. "We learned today that those who step up and play aggressive in 10-point tie-breaks are usually the ones that win. We played better at doubles today, with our teams meshing well."
Â
UNF added two singles wins over Georgia State and three singles victories over Florida Atlantic. Rebeca Pereira claimed a 6-2, 6-4 match against Georgia State's Tarani Kamoe. Quetzali Vazquez held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 three-set victory against Veroniz Golanora.
Â
Julia Sbricea picked up a pair of wins against Florida Atlantic opponents, powering her way to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alexis Crenshaw and then defeating Natalia Tomaszewicz 6-3, 6-1. Mariella Calderon added the third singles win over Florida Atlantic with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Crenshaw.
Â
In doubles, UNF won two of the three matches against Georgia State. On the No. 2 court, Pereira and Luise Intert picked up an 8-6 win over Chaimaa Roudami and Niriantsa Rasalomala. Quetzali Vazquez and Esther Zuniga came away with an 8-7 (4) tie-break win against Marcia Tere-Apisah and Kristin Rehse.
Â
The Ospreys return to action in two weeks when they host the Bedford Cup Oct. 10-12 at the UNF Tennis Complex in what is UNF's only home tournament of the fall season.Â
