JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis added two more flight titles to its tally at the Bedford Cup, capturing both the Singles 3 and Singles 5 crown at the UNF Tennis Complex. Michelle Valdez was the Singles 3 champion, while Mariella Calderon went a perfect 3-0 in Singles 5 round robin format.
Â
"I was very happy with the way we finished the tournament," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We played good tennis and acted the right way on every court. Taylor and Michelle gained a lot of confidence from their play this weekend and learned that thinking the right way allows them to use their physical talent in tough matches."
Â
Valdez was scheduled to play UCF's Kennan Johnson in the finals, but won the flight with a walkover after Johnson withdrew from the competition.
Â
Calderon wrapped up an undefeated weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Florida A&M's Elizabeth Clayton.
Â
In Sunday's consolation play, Luise Intert battled to a 7-5, 6-3 victory against FIU's Katie Brozovich in the Singles 3 consolation bracket.
Â
UNF also played several exhibition matches, coming away with five victories.
Â
"It was great to see the girls in the exhibition matches bounce back from tough losses and win a few more matches today," said Cohen.
Â
Rebeca Pereira came back for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast's Julianna Curtis. Valdez, who played in exhibition after her main draw match did not occur, hung on against Miami's Silvia Fuentes for a 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 triumph. Marina Cunningham overpowered Miami's Judith Bohnenkamp 6-3, 6-1, while Esther Zuniga cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win against USF's Jessica Cortes. Quetzali Vazquez took a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Florida Gulf Coast's Alexandra Landert.
Â
UNF continues with its fall season with next week's USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships held Oct. 16-20 at Georgia Tech.
