Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –The North Florida women's soccer team ended their four-match homestand Sunday with a 5-0 loss to Boston College at Hodges Stadium.
Â
"Boston College proved why they were an Elite Eight team last year and one of the best teams in the country," said head coach Robin Confer. "I don't feel like the score indicates the type of game it was."
Â
The Eagles (3-1-0) jumped out early in the third minute, when Hayley Dowd took advantage of a turnover off of the Osprey free kick, finding Stephanie McCaffrey who had a wide open net.
Â
McCaffrey then returned the favor in the 16th minute, when she delivered a long pass to Dowd who won the one-on-one in the middle.
Â
Dowd scored her second goal of the match in the 20th minute, when she put home a shot off of a rebound, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead going into the half.
Â
"As a team we need to be better dealing with goal mouth scrambles. We keep giving up too many goals in that area and we have to improve on that and not put ourselves behind early where we are chasing games," added Confer. "I felt like we created three or four really good opportunities against a quality opponent that we need to finish."
Â
North Florida's best chance of the first half came when sophomore Kayla Aritt got behind the defense and around the charging goalkeeper, and her attempt at the open goal went just wide. Not too long after that, Aritt again got behind the defense and served in a cross just outside the reach of a charging Sarah Wasser. Â
Â
The Ospreys started the second half off strong but couldn't seem to find the net, with eight of their 12 shots of the match coming in the second half. Sophomore Gabrielle Ligouri closed out a barrage of shots with a header off of a well-placed corner, but the Eagles keeper was able to make the save.
Â
Later in the second half, freshman Kayla Gray found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper forcing her to come up for the huge save. Gray wasn't done as she outmuscled a couple of defenders and ripped a shot off of the upper 90.
Alexis Breadeu found herself with half volley chance from 12 yds out that was blocked by a Boston College defender and landed to the feet of Gray who blasted another shot on frame, forcing another save..Â
Â
In the 76th minute, Emily Hoffend scored for the Eagles off of her own rebound, putting Boston College up 4-0.
Â
The Eagles scored their fifth and final goal in the 88th minute when Lauren Bernard delivered a cross from the left side to Andrea O'Brien who found the right side of the net.
Â
"In the second half we put a lot of pressure on them, had some good moments and some players that were challenged at halftime responded well," concluded Confer. "We now have to focus on an important, six-game road trip where we need to get some results."Â Â Â
Â
The Ospreys hit the road for the first time this season next weekend when they travel to Charleston, S.C. for the Nike Tournament. They will play Charleston Southern on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 p.m. and The Citadel on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 pm.
