CHARLESTON, S.C. - The North Florida women's soccer team (0-5-0) suffered their third one-goal loss of the season Friday night to Charleston Southern at the Nike Tournament at CSU Soccer Field in Charleston, S.C.
Â
"We are disappointed in the result today. We didn't play the way we are capable of in the first half and it cost us," said head coach Robin Confer.
Â
The Buccaneers (4-1-0) netted the only goal in a physical match in the 36th minute, when Chelsea Frankeny received a through-ball from Marissa Lavatori, Frankeny beat the defense and dribbled the ball past senior goalkeeper Megan Dorsey.
Â
The Ospreys came out strong in the second half, recording 10 shots, seven of which were on goal, a season-high for any half this year, but they were ultimately unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.
Â
In the 72nd minute, freshman Hanna Parado had a great chance to equalize after a goal box scramble between freshman Kayla Gray and her defender, causing the ball to fall out wide of the six yard box, and Parado tailed her shot just wide of the goal.
Â
In the 75th minute, freshmen Jess Kinlaw and Gray played a great give and go, leaving Kinlaw 1-one-1 at the top of the box , but the shot sailed inches over the crossbar.
Â
"The team responded well after halftime and created several opportunities and we need to again finish our chances," added Confer.
Â
The Ospreys totaled 19 shots, 10 of which were on goal, both season-highs. Junior Lanie Keating tallied a season-high four shots, all of which were on goal. Senior Jill Holdsworth also had four shots, two of which were on goal. Dorsey finished with nine saves in the net for North Florida.
Â
"Some players really fought hard today and left it all out on the field," concluded Confer. "We can't dwell on this result and we have to move forward and focus on our game on Sunday."
Â
The Ospreys are back in action in Charleston on Sunday when they face the Bulldogs of The Citadel. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m.
