JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -Â In an exciting opening night match Friday, the North Florida women's soccer team was defeated by High Point, 4-3, after a 90th minute goal.
Â
"Obviously it is a tough loss, but our girls fought hard. Give credit to High Point for coming out in the second half with energy," said first year Head Coach Robin Confer. "We have to do a better job coming out of the locker room and closing out games."
Â
In a back and forth game, the Ospreys (0-1-0) started hot when freshman Kayla Gray notched the first Atlantic Sun Conference goal of the season in the fifth minute off of a Jill Holdsworth pass.
Â
North Florida struck again in the 21st minute when freshman Sarah Wasser took advantage of a defensive miscue and beat the keeper back to the goal with a low shot.
Â
High Point (1-0-0) rebounded from the 2-0 first half deficit immediately in the 46th minute as Jacky Kessler put home a shot from the center following a scramble in the box. Kelsey Perrell equalized at 2-2 with a upper-90 strike from the 18 yard line in the 60th minute.
Â
Sophomore Kayla Aritt put the Ospreys back on top, 3-2 in the 72nd minute when she beat the keeper one-on-one from a sophomore Alexis Bredeau pass.
Â
High Point again equalized at 3-3 when Perrell delivered a pass off of a deflection in the box to Taylor Thompson, who finished in the right side of the net.
Â
In a tense final minute of play, Paige Lloyd found the center of the net following a barrage of shots at senior goalkeeper Megan Dorsey.
Â
In the final tally, High Point edged the Ospreys in shots on goal, 7-6, while both teams had 11 shots total. Dorsey finished with three saves.
Â
"We are going to learn from this as a team and get better. We now need to put this behind us and prepare for a very good FIU team on Sunday," added Confer. "It was encouraging to see two freshmen score their first career goals and we played some good soccer at times."
Â
The Ospreys are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host FIU at Hodges Stadium.Â
