EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 51-ranked North Florida men's golf team narrowly missed making a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing tied for sixth Saturday at the NCAA Regional held at Eugene Country Club.
The Ospreys carded a final round 302 en route to finishing the 54-hole event tied with Chattanooga at 885. The total was just five shots behind No. 22 South Carolina, who claimed the fifth and final spot to advance to the NCAA Championship round.
Junior MJ Maguire led UNF with a final round 4-over 74 to finish with a team best tie for 16th at 217 (+7). Fellow junior Parker Jones joined McGuire among the Top 20 individuals after a round of 75 on Saturday allowed him to finish tied for 20th at 219 (+9).
"Most of the guys again got off to a pretty solid start today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Thru the opening six holes we were right there. Unfortunately, the rest of the day was hard to watch. Our entire lineup is returning next year so hopefully we can learn and grow from this experience. This has been a theme for us all season of playing poorly down the stretch, so I will have to make sure we work on the things we need to that will allow us to finish stronger next year."
The remainder of the Osprey lineup saw sophomore Austin Padova finish tied for 39th (224) after a final round 75, sophomore Taylor Hancock finished tied for 50th (227) with a 78 and junior Joey Petronio had a 79 to finish tied for 54th (229).
No. 3-ranked Stanford led wire-to-wire in claiming the team title finishing with a three-round total of 853, one shot ahead of runner-up No. 40 Oregon (854). No. 15 Oklahoma finished third at 860 with No. 10 Houston (875) and South Carolina (880) securing the top five spots. UNF and Chattanooga were sixth followed by No. 34 Liberty (889), ETSU (889), No. 27 Baylor (893), No. 47 Tennessee (894), Wichita State (911) and Northern Colorado (922).
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers earned the medalist crown with a 6-under 204, marking the only player in the field under par for the event. Chattanooga's Chris Robb edged Liberty's Niklas Lindstrom to secure the spot as the advancing individual to the NCAA Championship.
NCAA Championship play is set to tee off on May 27 at Prairie Dunes in Wichita, Kan.
