KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- For the second time in his career, North Florida junior All-American golfer MJ Maguire captured the individual medalist title while leading the No. 50-ranked Ospreys to a second-place finish at the Irish Creek Collegiate.
Maguire followed up his career best round (64) on Saturday with a final round 3-under 68 en route to winning the individual competition by four strokes with a total of 205 (-8). As a team, UNF concluded the 54-hole event just one shot behind tournament champion Georgia State. The Osprey posted a total of 860 (+8) including a final round 290.
"It was a great win for MJ today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We played well as a team for a good bit of the day. Unfortunately, we made just a few too many small mistakes down the stretch and just couldn't produce a solid fourth score. This struggles were just enough to keep us from winning the team competition. Overall it was still a solid way to finish the regular season and definitely something we can build on heading into the conference tournament."
Sophomore Austin Padova carded a final round 1-under 70 on Sunday to join Maguire among the Top 20, finishing tied for 17th at 217. Junior Joey Petronio finished tied for 21st at 219 after a final round 74.
Sophomores Taylor Hancock (224) and Joe Stepnes rounded out the Osprey lineup finishing tied for 41st and 65th, respectively.
No. 47 Georgia State claimed the team crown with a three-round 859 while Charlotte and No. 36 Wake Forest finished behind UNF in a tie for third at 871. Ohio State finished fifth at 873 followed by Duke (874), Notre Dame (874), Indiana (879), East Carolina (880), Appalachian State (883), Davidson (884), North Carolina (891), Akron (894), Kansas (898), Richmond (899) and UNC Wilmington (904).
North Florida now turns it attention to postseason play as the Ospreys are the two-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champions. The ASun tournament is scheduled for Apr. 20-22 in Braselton, Ga.
