Round One Results
BRASELTON, Ga. -- The No. 48-ranked North Florida men's golf team opened defense of their back-to-back championships at the Atlantic Sun Tournament with a round of 295 on Sunday at The Legends of Chateau Elan course.
The Ospreys ended the first of three rounds of competition in third place. Junior All-American MJ Maguire led the way for UNF shooting a 1-under 71 to finish the day tied for second in medalist play.
"We got off to a bad start and then played some solid golf," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Unfortunately, we struggled over the last few holes. All in all it was not so bad a round after the way we began the day. We need to regroup and have a good round tomorrow to get back into the hunt."
UNF sophomores Austin Padova and Taylor Hancock both carded rounds of 2-over 74 to join Maguire in the Top 20 rankings, ending the day tied for 12th. Junior Joey Petronio is tied for 20th after a first round 76 while sophomore Joe Stepnes rounded out the Osprey lineup with a round of 82 (T-44).
No. 42-ranked Kennesaw State posted an even par 288 to grab the lead of the team competition. No. 28 Mercer is second at 290 followed by UNF, ETSU (299), Jacksonville (304), Lipscomb (307), USC Upstate (311), Florida Gulf Coast (312), Northern Kentucky (312) and Stetson (318).
KSU's Teremoana Beaucousin shot a 3-under 69 to lead a group of four players including Maguire, the event's defending medalist, on the individual list.
Tournament action at the ASun Championship continues with second round play Monday at the par 72, 7,032-yard layout of The Legends. North Florida will begin play on Hole 1 alongside KSU and Mercer at 8:45 a.m.
Live scoring for the event is available on Golfstat.com and the ASun Men's Golf championship website page.
