BRASELTON, Ga. - The 36th Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship begins Sunday as North Florida and the rest of the league's teams turn their sights to The Legends Course at The Chateau Elan Golf Club once again for a chance to win a conference championship.
The Ospreys are the two-time defending champion, after capturing last year's event with a three-round total of 881. UNF tries to become just the third A-Sun Men's Golf team to win three consecutive team championships, and the first since Houston Baptist in 1986. North Florida has finished in the top-three of the event in every year since joining the A-Sun.
North Florida junior All-American MJ Maguire returns to defend his individiual title. He can become the fourth player in tournament history to repeat as medalist. The last to accomplish that was Duncan Stewart of Jacksonville (2005, 2006).
The Atlantic Sun boasts five teams ranked in the top-100 of the latest Golfweek Ranking, while four teams rank inside the top-60 of Golfstat Rankings.
"It is always fun to play for a championship," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We are going for a three-peat and you don't get that chance very often. The course is playing really tough as the winter here has made it play wet. Mercer, Kennesaw State and ETSU have all had good years so it should be a fun battle this week."
Maguire leads an Osprey lineup that also includes fellow junior Joey Petronio and a trio of sophomores, Austin Padova, Taylor Hancock and Joe Stepnes.
The Ospreys will open defense of their title on Hole 1 beginning at 9:45 a.m. UNF will be paired with ETSU and Kennesaw State in the opening round of the three-day event.
