JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Marissa Thomas scored both game-winning runs as University of North Florida softball took both games of Saturday's doubleheader with Jacksonville during the SunTrust River City Rumble and Senior Day at the UNF Softball Complex, winning Game One 4-3 in eight innings and Game Two 3-2.
In the first game, Thomas was on third when Rachel Engel hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Thomas to score in the eighth. After a 1-hour, 35-minute lightning delay in Game Two, Thomas hit a lead-off solo home run to left field.
Jacksonville got out to an early 3-0 lead in Game One as Karson Tuck hit a three-run homer to left field in the first inning.
UNF cut into the Dolphins' lead in the third as Katie Mandigo got home on a wild pitch. The Ospreys made ti a one-run game in the fourth as Engel scored from second on an Ashia Kerr hit to center field. Danica Mandarano notched the game-tying run with a one-out, solo home run down the right field line.
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, Thomas led off the eighth with a double. She got to third on Abby Tewey's sacrifice bunt, leading up to Engel's sacrifice fly.
Cortney Radke was credited with the win after allowing two earned runs off eight hits and striking out six in 8.0 innings.
Taylor Rossman had the loss after coming in for the final 3.1 innings and allowing one run off three hits. She also struck out one.
Engel was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI in Game One.
Lexie Ballard was 3-for-4 for the Dolphins.
In Game Two, UNF got out to a 1-0 lead as Tewey drove Thomas in with a double to center field in the first. However, Jacksonville quickly tied it in the second as Brooke Smith's hit to right center brought home Ballard.
Lexi Taylor put UNF up by one in the third as she got home on Ashley Holton's double. The Dolphins evened the score at 2-2 with Charli Bradshaw's single bringing home Victoria Brown in the top of the fifth.
The lightning delay began during the next at-bat as Ballard had a 3-1 count with two outs. After the delay concluded, Kaylie Wallace got Ballard to strikeout swinging and halting any momentum for the Dolphins.
Thomas put UNF ahead for good in the sixth. Her lead-off shot was her team-leading sixth home run of the year.
Wallace, who came in for the final 4.1 innings, was credited with the win after allowing one run off two hits and striking out three.
Jessi Walker had the loss after allowing three runs off three hits and striking out two in 5.0 innings.
Holton, Thomas and Tewey each had a hit for the Ospreys in Game Two.
Five different Dolphins each had one hit.
