Team Duals Schedule (Friday-Saturday)
Pairs Tournament Schedule (Sunday)
MIAMI -- After winning their last seven dual matches including six against Atlantic Sun Conference foes, the North Florida sand volleyball team will participate in the FIU Sand & Surf Invitational beginning on Friday morning.
The Ospreys (11-3, 6-0 Atlantic Sun) enter the weekend's competition on a roll after sweeping matches over Stetson, Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast last week. With the wins, UNF has already earned a share of their third consecutive conference championship.
North Florida will open the competition Friday against LSU (4-5) at 8:30 a.m. followed by a non-conference meeting with Florida Gulf Coast (1-12) at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Ospreys will face No. 7-ranked FIU (9-3) at 10:30 a.m. and then conclude team dual competition against FAU (2-8) at 4:30 p.m. Sunday's schedule features three flighted pairs brackets -- Gold (No. 1 & 2 pairs), Silver (No. 3 & 4 pairs) and Bronze (No. 5 & 6 pairs).
UNF's match with LSU will be a bit of a reunion as Osprey head coach Steve Loeswick was an assistant coach for the TIgers before taking over at UNF. In addition, LSU sand head coach Russell Brock was a collegiate teammate of Loeswick's at Southern Cal. UNF assistant coach Samantha Dabbs was also a two-year standout setter at LSU. The TIgers are in their inaugural season sponsoring a sand volleyball team.
Event host FIU moved up to seventh in the most recent AVCA Sand Volleyball poll and features a deep lineup. The Ospreys and Panthers have played in the same events before but this will mark their first head-to-head team match. UNF swept a pair of road matches at FGCU last weekend and opened the season with a 3-2 victory over FAU in St. Augustine.
"Our team is looking forward to our trip down to FIU this weekend," said Loeswick. "We have been training well and are excited to play some more teams that we have never faced before. This will be our first time playing against LSU and FIU as a program. Both teams are well coached, and it will be fun playing against LSU with a staff who is like part of my family. They are in their first year with sand volleyball and I have no doubt they are going to do a great job with that program. This weekend is another great opportunity for our pairs and team to continue to improve."
Following the Sand & Surf Invitational, North Florida will conclude its regular season conference slate with a pair of matches at crosstown rival Jacksonville on Apr. 9.
