
Ospreys Look To Split Season Series with USF/UCF in Mid-Week

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The North Florida baseball team will remain in the state of Florida but travel to the University of South Florida on Tuesday night and the University of Central Florida on Wednesday night to try and even up the season series with the Sunshine State schools.

About USF: The Ospreys will look to avenge a 12-1 loss to the Bulls in the final game of the 2014 Best Bet Classic back on February 16th. USF racked up an opponent-high, 19 hits against the Ospreys in just the third game of the season. North Florida was limited to just eight hits and one run on an RBI single by Donnie Dewees. USF won their first seven games of the season and are currently 24-19 on the year. The Bulls own a 6-5 advantage in the all-time series that began in 2006.
About UCF: The Knights come into Wednesday's contest ranked No. 18 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Rankings, up two spots from a week ago. UCF is fresh off a series sweep of American Athletic Conference foe, Rutgers this past weekend. The Knights are winners of the eight of their last nine games with wins over nationally-ranked Louisville, Florida A&M and Rutgers. On April 1, the Knights came away with an 8-4 win over the Ospreys at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys and Knights combined to use 10 pitchers and seven of the 12 runs in the contest game after the sixth inning. The Ospreys hold a slight, 8-7 edge over UCF in the all-time series.
In the State of Florida: USF and UNF are the fourth and fifth-straight Sunshine State opponents for the Ospreys. North Florida is 5-8 this season against Florida schools and will play their sixth game against a ranked opponent this season. The Ospreys dropped contests to UNC, Florida and FIU earlier this season.
A-Sun Player of the Week: Junior Trent Higginbothem was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week after a 10-RBI series against Stetson this weekend. The third baseman went 8-for-14 (.571) with a pair of home runs, two doubles and four runs scored. He has an RBI in each of the last six games and leads the team with 44 on the year. Of his 44 RBIs, 38 of them have come against Atlantic Sun opponents.
Middle Inning Massacre: The middle three innings for the Ospreys proved to be the difference in Sunday's 10-4 win against Stetson and the ultimately series. North Florida scored six more runs between the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in on Sunday. Of the 30 Osprey runs produced in the series, 24 of them came in the middle three innings.
Outfield Assists: The Ospreys are among the nation's leaders in outfield assists with 19 this season. Drew Weeks leads the way with nine and Garrick Ferguson has seven in 27 starts. Ferguson prevented a run at the plate against Stetson on Sunday on perfect throw to home, ending a seventh rally for the Hatters.
Digging the Long Ball: Against Stetson the Ospreys hits two home runs in each game, aiding in series sweep. Three came off the bat of sophomore Corbin Olmstead, two from Trent Higginbothem and the one from Ty Kelly. The Ospreys are 7-2 this season when homering more than once in a game. The 31 dingers this season are 17th most in Division I baseball.
Weeks in the National Ranks: For the third-straight week Junior Drew Weeks leads the nation in hits with 80 despite playing only three games this past week. He remains in first place in batting average (.447) and still leads the country with nine outfield assists. He boasts a .648 slugging percentage which leads the Atlantic Sun and ranks 12th in the country.
Double Digit Hits: The Ospreys have collected 10 or more hits in each of their last nine games. Against Stetson, North Florida compiled 29 hits in three games and lead the Atlantic Sun with 10.98 hits per game.
Team National Ranks: After a tremendous hitting display this past weekend, the Ospreys are ranked 13th in the nation with 472 hits. North Florida is 14th in the country with a .307 batting average. They are the only team in the Altantic Sun with a batting average over .300
