JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball plays its final non-conference home game of the season on Wednesday when the Ospreys host UCF in a single game at the UNF Softball Complex at 4 p.m.
"Our games with UCF are always a battle and that has been evident the last two years," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "I expect Wednesday will be no different. This will be a tough game and a great way to prepare for our series with Jacksonville this weekend."
UNF and UCF were originally supposed to meet in February, but inclement weather forced the game to be postponed to Wednesday.
It is the Ospreys' first home game in two weeks as UNF wrapped up a six-game road swing on Monday at Mercer. UNF comes off a 7-2 loss to the Bears on Monday. Both of the Ospreys' runs came as Rachel Engel drilled a two-out double in the top of the seventh.
Under head coach Marcie Hickey, UNF is 4-5 when playing its final nonconference home contest. Last season, the Ospreys posted a 4-2 win over Bethune-Cookman on Apr. 10. The Bethune-Cookman game was also the first time under Hickey in which the Ospreys' last out-of-conference home game was just a single contest. The previous four years were all doubleheaders.
After having its series at Temple rained out last weekend, UCF returns to action for the first time in a week. The Knights were last in action against Florida on Mar. 26, which concluded a month-long homestand that featured 22 games at the UCF Softball Complex. UCF fell 10-6 to Florida in a game that took 2-hours, 40-minutes and had 18 combined hits between the two teams. UCF is 1-0 against Atlantic Sun teams this season after defeating Jacksonville 4-2 on Mar. 5 at the Holiday Inn/UCF Tournament. In the latest NCAA statistics released on Mar. 31, UCF ranks fourth nationally in stolen bases with 2.37 per game. Kahley Novak – who leads UCF in batting (.380), hits (41) and runs (26) – is 21-for-25 in stolen bases. In the circle, the Knights' pitching staff has a combined 1.61 ERA with Shelby Turnier registering a team-best 1.18 ERA. She has also struck out 155 batters.
UCF leads the all-time series 7-5, but UNF was triumphant in the last meeting 2-0 on Feb. 13, 2013 in Orlando.
