ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Tournament action at the UNF Sand Invitational concluded Sunday with the North Florida sand volleyball team splitting a pair of matches against UL-Monroe and Florida State at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion.
The Ospreys (3-1) opened their day's play with a dominating 4-1 victory over ULM. UNF posted sweeps at pairings 2-5. Anna Budinska/Cari Whitmire topped the Warhawks' duo of Hadley Schwartz/Michelle McNamee (21-15, 21-8) at No. 2, while Emily Strack/Britt Claessens posted a win over Bianca Ocana/Alannah Cullum (21-18, 21-19) at No. 3.
UNF's No. 4 tandem of Tanner Garbutt/Cameron McGuire outlasted ULM's Hope Pawlik/Rachel Arnason in a hard fought match that featured a 33-31 win by the Ospreys in the first game followed by a 21-15 win. Julie Trembley/Emily Davanzo posted back-to-back 21-12 wins over Celine Flores/Kaitlyn Shearer. North Florida's lone loss came in a tightly contested battle at No. 1, as ULM's Zuzana Markova/Marcela Araya edged Dagnija Medina/Kim Hildreth, 21-12/21-19.
Against the No. 4 ranked Seminoles, the Ospreys battled in all five matches but were unable to pick up a win as FSU claimed the 5-0 win. At No. 1, Medina/Hildreth again took things down to the wire before falling 21-18/21-19 to Jace Pardon/Aurora Davis. UNF had their best chance for a win at the No. 2 pairing as Budinska/Whitmire claimed a 21-14 win in the first game before seeing FSU's sister duo of Stephanie and Kristina Pellitteri even the match with a 22-20 win. The third and deciding game went to the Noles, 15-12.
The Ospreys suffered straight set losses in spots 3-5. Strack/Claessens fell to Julie Brown/Melanie Pavels at No. 3 (21-14, 21-10), while Garbutt/McGuire dropped a 21-13/21-15 loss to Fatma Yildrim/Kayla Joyce. Trembley/Davanzo rounded out the UNF lineup with a tough 21-16/21-8 loss to Sarah Wickstrom/Katie Mosher.
Having successfully opened their 2014 slate, North Florida continues the season next at the Ron Jon Invite on Mar. 15-16 in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
