Sand Volleyball Hosts Opening Tournament in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The two-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion North Florida sand volleyball team opens its 2014 season this weekend by hosting the UNF Sand Invitational at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion.
The dual match tournament is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on both Saturday (Mar.8) and Sunday (Mar. 9). UNF's opening match will be against in-state rival FAU at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The Ospreys, who advanced to the AVCA National Championship tournament last season after sweeping the ASun regular season and tournament crowns, will welcome a highly competitive field that includes a pair of squads that also participated in last year's AVCA Championship -- Florida State and UL Monroe.
"We are so excited to get the sand season started with our home tournament," said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. "St. Augustine is a great location and with the teams participating in the event we should have some really great competition. I know our team is looking forward to playing against some new people. We are looking forward to the process of the season and working to get better each time we are on the court. This weekend is the next step towards our goal of being the best we can be at the end of the year."
A pair of teams enter the season debut event ranked in the preseason AVCA Top 10, with FSU listed No. 4 and FIU ranked No. 9. In addition to this pair, other teams competing this weekend in St. Augustine include ULM, Georgia State, Jacksonville, FAU, Jacksonville and South Carolina.
In addition to the tournament matches, North Florida will also face Flagler College in an exhibition match on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free to the UNF Sand Invitational and it is open to the public.
