JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The final weekend of the regular season for University of North Florida women's basketball begins on Thursday with an important game against Mercer that could determine the Ospreys' postseason fate.
Â
"We are looking to finish the season on a positive note," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We have not performed well this season, but we are continuing to work hard with our younger players getting valuable minutes. These are the last two home games and we hope the fans will come out and support this group of young ladies and our four graduating seniors."
Â
UNF needs to win Thursday night's game and have Lipscomb lose to ETSU in order to stay in contention for the No. 8 seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. However, an Osprey loss or a Lipscomb win on Thursday will eliminate UNF from the postseason.
Â
The Ospreys, who come off a tough road trip at USC Upstate and ETSU last weekend, end the regular season on their home floor for just the third time since joining the Atlantic Sun. The last time UNF had its final games of the regular season at home was during the 2009-10 campaign.
Â
Mercer has already clinched a berth in the Atlantic Sun Tournament and can either finish as high as No. 3 or as low as No. 5 following the weekend. The Bears began a regular season-ending three-game road trip at Kennesaw State last Saturday, taking a 74-53 victory over the Owls. Mercer has won its last three games and scored over 70 points in each of those contests. Precious Bridges leads the Bears with 15.8 points per game, while Briana Williams (12.8) and Kendra Grant (11.7) are also averaging double-digit points. Meanwhile, Teanna Robinson has a 10.1 rebound-per-game average and has tallied 102 blocks on the season.
Â
UNF leads the all-time series 10-8, but Mercer won this season's first meeting 62-48 on Jan. 2 in Macon, Ga., in what was the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams.
Â
Thursday's tip-off is set for 7 p.m., from UNF Arena.
