#SB Drops Series Finale at Mercer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball put up both of its runs in the seventh inning, but a five-run bottom of the sixth doomed the Ospreys at Mercer in a 7-2 loss at Sikes Field on Monday afternoon.

Rachel Engel's two-out double drove in both Danica Mandarano and Abby Tewey for UNF's (19-17 overall, 4-11 Atlantic Sun) only runs of the game. Mandarano had led off the inning with a single, while Tewey added a two-out hit through the right side.

Mercer (27-11, 9-2 Atlantic Sun) got its first run in the first inning as the Bears capitalized on an Osprey error that allowed Kaytlin Haney to score. The Bears went up 2-0 in the fourth as Kaylynn Sloat drilled a two-out solo home run to right field.

In the sixth, back-to-back home runs to left field allowed Mercer to take a 6-0 lead. Randi Rea hit a three-run shot to left field, while Riley Carter had a solo blast in the next at-bat. Mercer's final run came as McKenzie Woody scored a Haney's two-out triple to right center.

Kayla Goff had the loss after allowing four earned runs off seven hits and striking out two in 5.0 innings.

Kirsten Stevens fanned eight Ospreys and limited UNF to two runs off three hits in 7.0 innings in order to get the win.

Wood, Haney and Sloat each registered two hits for Mercer.

UNF returns to action on Wednesday with a mid-week game against UCF. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., from the UNF Softball Complex. Admission to all UNF home softball games is free.
