SPARTANBURG, S.C.—After matching the program record for overall and conference wins during the regular season, the North Florida basketball team opens postseason play Tuesday on the road against USC Upstate in the Hodge Center.
The Ospreys (16-15, 10-8 ASun) finished the conference season tied for fourth with ETSU and Lipscomb but enter the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed. Upstate is the No. 3 seed after going 18-3, 11-7 in the league.
North Florida enters the contest having posted back-to-back road wins at Mercer and Kennesaw State. UNF's win at Mercer marked the Bear's first home loss of the season. The Ospreys have won four of their last five road games while the Spartans went 11-2 (8-1 in conference) at home including wins in their last two outings.
UNF is appearing in its fifth consecutive Atlantic Sun tournament since becoming eligible for the event in the 2009-10 campaign. The Ospreys own a 2-4 mark in the event having reached the championship game in 2011 as the No. 6 seed. North Florida has dropped its last two tournament openers.
Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Dallas Moore leads a trio of UNF scorers in double digits averaging 12.5 points per game. Senior Travis Wallace, a second-team All-ASun honoree, is averaging 12.3 ppg while sophomore Beau Beech is scoring at a 10.4 points per game clip. Wallace also ranks second in the league in rebounding at 7.4 boards per game.
First-team All-ASun selection Torrey Craig paces a potent Upstate offense scoring 16.9 points a game, while senior teammate Ricardo Glenn, an all-conference second teamer, leads the league in rebounds at 8.0 rpg and chips in 13.2 ppg.
Tuesday's game marks the 22nd all-time meeting between UNF and USC Upstate, but will be the first meeting in postseason play. The Spartans owns a 13-8 lead in the series following after claiming both of the regular season meetings between the pair. Upstate bested the Ospreys, 81-70, in the last meeting at the Hodge Center on Feb. 20.
