SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Freshman Chris Davenport finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds but it just wasn't enough at the North Florida basketball team dropped a hard fought 80-74 decision to USC Upstate in quarterfinal action of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
The Ospreys finish the year at 16-16, matching the program record for wins in a season. It marked the 13 game for UNF against Atlantic Sun competition that was decided by six points or less.
"Tonight was a game that was a reflection of how our entire conference schedule went," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "Our guys again demonstrated a resilient and competitive spirit that helped them battle until the final buzzer. We really fought hard to get back into the game but had a few too many turnovers early in the game that put us in a hole that proved just a little too big to come back from. This team accomplished some special things for our program and I believe has us moving in a great direction."
Davenport's double-double was the third of his career and included his first career 20+ point performance. ASun Freshman of the Year Dallas Moore added 13 points for the Ospreys, while senior second-team All-ASun honoree Travis Wallace concluded his UNF career with 12 points and six rebounds.
Ricardo Glenn had 22 points and nine rebounds in leading the Spartans (19-13) to Thursday's ASun semifinal. Ty Greene had 14, Fred Miller finished with 13 and Jodd Maxey added 12 for Upstate. ASun leading scorer Torrey Craig, who averages 16.9 ppg, was held to just six points and a 1-for-11 shooting night.
Davenport kept the Ospreys in the game early scoring the first five points. Upstate moved in front 11-5, before UNF battled back to within one at 14-13 midway through the opening half. The Spartans then used a 9-2 spurt to open up an eight point advantage. The squads would trade baskets for the remainder of the half.
USC Upstate held a 38-30 lead at the half and eventually stretched their advantage to as much as 15 (61-46) with 9:54 left to play. The Ospreys refused to go away and rallied behind 20 points from Davenport and 11 for Moore in the second half to pull within four points in the final minute.
The Ospreys finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Spartans, 43-36. UNF also limited Upstate to just 1 of 10 from the three-point arc. USC Upstate benefitted from 18 UNF turnovers that they turned into 22 points and also attempted 15 more free throws.
